People think that watercolour painting is easy. Most students who take it up soon discover the complexity of this difficult, fluid and exciting medium. Paul was trained as a Furniture Designer at the West of England College of Art, Bristol, and worked in industry till 1986. Redundancy gave him the opportunity to explore the medium of watercolour. He is a member of the RI, RSMA, and AROI, as well as The Wapping Group of Artists He has taught for the past 23 years here in the UK, as well as many countries abroad, and is recognised for his sensitive and constructive teaching at all levels of ability.
He specialises in painting ‘en plein’ air and will expect students to paint direct from the subject whenever possible. In the event of wet weather there will be concentrated work in the studio: learning how to look, understand and interpret light by tonal exercises and using layers of paint to build atmosphere into a painting. Sketch books will be used to gather information for a finished painting.
